Film for secondary school pupils: Lady Bird (K-12)

(Directed by: Greta Gerwig, USA, 2017)

A comedy-drama about Christine (Saoirse Ronan) who insists on being called “Lady Bird” and struggles at the intersection of her school’s rigid traditions, fussy parents, her first heartaches and her great plans for the future.

Lady Bird is on a collision course with her strong-willed mother (Laurie Metcalf) who tirelessly works as a nurse to support the family after her husband (Tracy Letts) is left unemployed. Lady Bird and her mother are cut from the same cloth: they are equally stubborn. Set in early 2000s Sacramento, the film tells a touching story about relationships that shape us, beliefs that define us and the irreplaceable place called home.

Lady Bird is the directing debut of actor Greta Gerwig, establishing her as a bold new voice in cinema. She also wrote Lady Bird, finding both humorous and touching aspects in the tumultuous relationship between the mother and her teenage daughter.
